Life Skills

Why Life Skills learning matters in our curriculum

At Tameside Alternative Provision Academy, we believe that education must prepare young people not only for academic success, but for the realities of everyday life.
Our Life Skills curriculum has a vital place within our wider offer, giving students the practical knowledge, personal confidence and independence they need to thrive both now and in adulthood. For many of our learners, structured opportunities to explore real‑world skills are essential in helping them overcome barriers, build resilience and develop positive habits that support long‑term wellbeing.
Our scheme of work covers a broad range of meaningful, age appropriate topics designed to meet the diverse needs of students both within a PRU or special school setting.
These include:
Personal safety and awareness
Understanding risks, safe decision‑making, online safety and recognising unsafe situations.
Emotional regulation and wellbeing
Managing feelings, coping strategies, self‑advocacy and building confidence.
Communication and social interaction
Developing respectful relationships, conflict resolution, teamwork and everyday communication skills.
Practical independence
Planning journeys, basic household tasks, organisation skills and personal hygiene routines.
Financial awareness
Understanding money, budgeting, spending choices and recognising value.
Health and healthy living
Making informed choices around food, exercise, sleep and self‑care.
Preparing for adulthood
Exploring employment skills, responsibilities and future aspirations.

By embedding Life Skills into our curriculum, we ensure that every student—regardless of ability, background or starting point—has the chance to develop a strong foundation for independent, healthy and positive futures.

This scheme of work plays a crucial role in helping our learners become capable, confident and empowered young people, ready for the next stage of life.
