Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

What is SEND?

A child or young person has SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them.
A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if they:
  • have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age;

    or
  • have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post-16 institutions.

SEND Code of Practice 2015

This is a broad definition covering all children and young people from 0-25 years of age.
The SEND Code of Practice 2015 identifies 4 main areas of need:
  • Communication and Interaction
  • Cognition and Learning
  • Social, Mental and Emotional health
  • Sensory and/ or Physical Needs
White Bridge College
At White Bridge College, we are the Key Stage 2 to 4 educational provision for students who have been permanently excluded from mainstream education.
We work closely with families and professionals to support the needs of all of our students and to ensure all our students have access to the educational provision required to meet their needs.
Elmbridge School
Elmbridge School is a specialist provision for Key Stage 4 students in Year 10 and Year 11 with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) for their Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs.
