Our TAPA Farm and Animals

At Tameside Alternative Provision Academy (TAPA), our on‑site farm is at the heart of what makes our environment unique, nurturing and transformative for our students.
Our diverse range of animals provides daily opportunities for hands‑on learning, emotional regulation, responsibility and connection with living creatures.
Many of our animals are adopted or rehomed, offering them a second chance in a safe and loving community — and giving students meaningful experiences in compassion, patience and care.
A Living, Learning Environment
Our farm includes:
  • 2 Pygmy Goats
  • 2 Sheep
  • Two small flocks of free‑range chickens
  • 20 Guinea pigs
  • 6 Rabbits
  • 1 African pygmy dormouse
  • 1 Gerbil
  • 3 Chinchillas
  • 1 Hamster
  • 2 Therapy Pugs — Cilla (black) and Marylin (blonde)
Each animal contributes to our learning environment in different ways, helping students build confidence, develop practical skills and regulate their emotions through calm, purposeful activity.

How Our Animals Live

At TAPA, we are committed to providing environments that meet the physical, emotional and behavioural needs of every animal:
  • Rabbits live in secure outdoor hutches, with students helping to clean, feed and enrich their space.
  • Sheep and goats have warm outdoor houses and access to grazing pastures, giving students opportunities to understand land management and daily routines.
  • Chickens are kept in safe coops but are free‑range during the day, allowing natural behaviours such as foraging and dust bathing.
  • Small mammals, including guinea pigs, chinchillas, the dormouse, gerbil, and hamster, live in carefully designed indoor enclosures that support their species‑specific needs.
  • And of course, our two therapy pugs, Cilla and Marylin, are cherished members of the TAPA family — providing comfort, companionship and emotional support to students across the school.

The Benefits for Our Students

Our farm is more than a collection of animals — it is a living extension of our curriculum, pastoral support and therapeutic provision.
Through daily interactions with the animals, students:
  • Develop empathy, nurturance and patience
  • Gain confidence through gentle handling and routine responsibilities
  • Learn teamwork and communication
  • Build practical knowledge of animal welfare, nutrition and habitats
  • Experience calm, grounding moments that support emotional wellbeing
  • Understand the value of rehoming, second chances, and responsibility
The presence of our therapy pugs, Cilla and Marylin, further enhances the nurturing environment. Their gentle nature, humour, and affection make them invaluable in helping students feel safe, regulated, and connected during the school day.
