LGBT+ Advice & Guidance

LGBT+ Support at Tameside Alternative Provision Service

At Tameside Alternative Provision Service, we are committed to creating a safe, respectful and welcoming environment where every young person feels able to be themselves.
We celebrate diversity and work hard to ensure that all learners—regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation or background—are supported, valued and included. Our approach is rooted in kindness, dignity and respect, and we work closely with families, carers and external partners to provide high quality information, guidance and support.
Support for LGBT+
Young People & Families
We understand that young people and their families may have questions or need advice as they explore and understand identity. At TAPA, we provide:
  • A supportive environment where students can speak openly with trusted staff
  • Clear signposting to specialist organisations offering guidance for LGBT+ young people and their families
  • Staff training to ensure our team understands how to support students sensitively and appropriately.

Celebrating LGBT+
Inclusion at TAPA
At TAPA, we actively promote equality and inclusion.
We encourage learners to celebrate who they are and to show respect for the identities and experiences of others. Our students are supported to challenge stereotypes, celebrate difference and foster positive relationships.
We regularly create opportunities for learners to express their voices and take part in activities that promote inclusion, such as:
  • Participation in equality themed projects or creative work.
  • Class discussions that explore identity, representation and diversity.
  • Awareness days and events that help students learn about and celebrate LGBT+ communities.
LGBT+ Representation
in the Curriculum
We believe that representation matters.
LGBT+ people, stories and achievements are included across our curriculum—not limited to stand alone lessons. This approach helps students:
  • See themselves reflected in their learning.
  • Build understanding and acceptance of others.
  • Engage in open and respectful conversations about identity, equality and diversity.

Our Commitment to Tackling HBT Bullying

Tameside Alternative Provision Service has a zero tolerance approach to HBT (homophobic, biphobic and transphobic) bullying. Every learner has the right to feel safe, respected and protected.
If a student experiences or witnesses bullying of any kind, they can:
  • Speak to any trusted member of staff.
  • Use our bullying reporting processes, including online forms or face to face conversations.
All concerns are taken seriously and responded to promptly.
A Safe Space for Support and Conversations
We provide safe, supportive spaces where students can speak with trained staff during break or lunchtime if they need advice or someone to talk to.
