Core Values

Personal Development at Tameside Alternative Provision Academy

At Tameside Alternative Provision Academy, we understand that personal development is far wider than academic learning alone.
Our curriculum reflects the whole journey of each young person—supporting their growth in the classroom, within the community and through meaningful experiences that build confidence, resilience and independence.
We believe every learner deserves opportunities that recognise their strengths, broaden their horizons and equip them with the life skills they need to move forward positively.

Our Vision for Personal Development

Our aim is to provide a rich and varied programme that supports students to:
  • Develop their individual talents and personal interests
  • Build positive character traits such as resilience, confidence and responsibility
  • Become active, respectful and compassionate members of their community
  • Access opportunities without barriers, ensuring equity for all
We want our learners to feel empowered, valued and supported as they progress through their time at TAPA.

A Curriculum Built Around the Needs of Our Learners

We follow a research informed model of Personal Development, aligned with national guidance and statutory Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) expectations.
Our curriculum:
  • Builds year on year, taking into account what students have learned previously
  • Embeds key life skills essential for adulthood
  • Broadens understanding of the world and prepares young people for life in modern Britain
  • Encourages active participation in discussions and safe exploration of challenging topics
  • Supports students to make safe, healthy and informed choices
We create a learning environment where students feel listened to, respected and able to express themselves with confidence.

Promoting Positive Values and Ready for Life

Personal Development at TAPA helps learners develop a strong understanding of:
  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance
These values underpin respectful relationships, decision making and active citizenship. We help students recognise that difference is something to value and celebrate—and that every individual contributes positively to our community.

Wellbeing, Safety and a Supportive Environment

We encourage students to develop the confidence and knowledge they need to look after both their physical and mental health. Through Personal Development lessons, learners explore:
  • Online and offline safety
  • Healthy relationships and boundaries
  • Strategies for emotional wellbeing
  • Where to access support when needed
Our approach ensures students feel safe, supported and able to ask questions without judgement.

Preparing Learners for the Future

Careers education is an important part of our Personal Development curriculum. We help students:
  • Understand pathways into education, training and employment
  • Explore local labour market opportunities
  • Build employability skills such as communication, teamwork and problem solving
  • Gain confidence for their next steps
Our goal is to ensure every young person leaves TAPA fully prepared for the transition into their chosen post-16 journey.
Creating a Community Where Everyone Belongs
At TAPA, inclusivity sits at the heart of what we do. We strive to ensure every learner—regardless of age, disability, gender, race, religion, belief, sex, sexual orientation or background—feels welcomed, valued and part of our community.
Through our Personal Development curriculum, we foster a culture where everyone can thrive together, learn from each other and recognise the strength in our diverse experiences.
