British Values

At Tameside Alternative Provision Service (TAPA), we are dedicated to providing a safe, inclusive and supportive environment where every learner is valued.

Promoting British Values is an integral part of this commitment and is woven throughout our curriculum, our pastoral work and our wider school experiences.
These values help young people develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to become responsible, respectful and active members of the community.
How We Promote British Values
British Values are actively embedded through SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development), group projects, restorative conversations and everyday interactions.
We help students understand how these values shape positive relationships and support their personal development. Below are the five British Values alongside real, practical examples of how they are lived out at TAPA.
Democracy
We encourage learners to understand that their views matter and that they can influence decisions.
Examples of democracy in action:
  • Learner voice activities where students help shape aspects of school life, such as break time activities or themed weeks.
  • Opportunities to contribute ideas during circle time, group discussions and restorative sessions.
  • Frequent student voice sessions.
Rule of Law
We support young people in recognising the importance of rules and laws, understanding the reasons behind them and the consequences of choices.
Examples of rule of law in action:
  • Clear behavioural expectations reinforced positively and consistently across the provision.
  • Regular restorative conversations helping students reflect on behaviour and understand how actions impact others.
  • Workshops exploring the role of the police, fire service or other agencies to show how laws keep communities safe.
Individual Liberty
Students are encouraged to make informed choices, develop confidence and understand their rights within a safe and supportive setting.
Examples of individual liberty in action:
  • Tailored learning pathways that allow students to work at a pace and level that suits their needs.
  • Opportunities to choose options within lessons, such as how to present work or which activity to complete first.
  • Supportive discussions promoting safe decision making, personal boundaries and online safety.
Respect
Respect is a core expectation at TAPA and is modelled by staff at all times. Students learn to appreciate their own worth and the value of others.
Examples of respect in action:
  • Daily positive interactions where staff model respectful communication and active listening.
  • Celebrating student achievements—academic, personal and social—on recognition boards and through ‘praise cards’.
  • Encouraging students to help keep shared spaces tidy and welcoming for everyone.
Tolerance of Different
Faiths and Beliefs
We celebrate diversity and help young people understand and value the different backgrounds, cultures and traditions that shape our community.
Examples of tolerance in action:
  • Learning about and acknowledging key festivals and cultural events throughout the year.
  • Activities that explore different beliefs and traditions in a respectful, curiosity driven way.
  • Encouraging open discussion where students can ask questions, share experiences and learn from each other.
How These Values
Support Our Learners
Promoting British Values helps students to:
  • Build confidence, resilience and self belief.
  • Understand right and wrong and appreciate the role of rules and laws.
  • Take responsibility for their actions and contributions to the community.
  • Develop positive relationships based on empathy, understanding and respect.
  • Appreciate diversity and engage positively with people from different backgrounds.
  • Recognise how democratic processes influence decisions that shape society.

At Tameside Alternative Provision Service, British Values underpin everything we do. They help create a positive, nurturing environment where every learner has the opportunity to succeed.
